"The Hero of Ferelden." More people know him by that title than they do by his name. And if they're not calling him The Hero of Ferelden, they're calling him Warden-Commander or Arl Varalas. They don't need to address him with titles, he tells them, but they rarely listen. They're intimidated. Intimidated by a man who, with the help of a few good friends, restored order to the Circle of Magi, helped put a king on Orzammar's throne, lifted a curse from the dalish in the Brecilian forest, removed the werewolf curse in the same area, located Andraste's sacred ashes, and used a small amount of the ashes to save Arl Eamon's life. He helped gather the Landsmeet helped in removing Loghain from the throne, executed him, and made Alistair king of Ferelden. It brought him allies from across Ferelden necessary to fight the blight, to fight the archdemon. When the archdemon fell and the blight crumbled, it became very clear that Varalas and his companions had gained many enemies during their travels. There were plenty who despised him for gathering forces against Loghain, for helping to usurp him, for killing him, and for making a bastard son king. For associating with criminals like Zevran Arainai, apostates like Morrigan, and Qunari like Sten. For not annulling the circle. None, however, can deny that he helped stopped the blight just a year after it began, that he saved countless lives. That didn't mean they didn't fight him, physically or politically, though.


Varalas is a man who won't take your shit, who won't let you walk all over him. He'll play nice and civil, all jokes and large smiles until you look down on him, until you try to use him. When you do look down on him, though, when you do try to use him, the smile drops and he reminds you that there's a damn good reason he is where he is.

Despite his unwillingness to take shit and his frequently provocative nature, Varalas can be a very warm and friendly man. He enjoys nothing more than a good time (although a good time can be anything from sharing a few drinks with friends to getting into a good, hard fight) and spending time with with friends and family. And to his friends and family, Varalas is incredibly loyal. He tries his best to write to everyone as often as possible. He tries to visit as well, but it's hard to leave Ferelden when duty ties him there, so he encourages friends in other countries to visit him instead. Duty tends to tie them to their countries as well, though.

And as for his work, his senechal will tell you he works far too hard and that he needs to take better care of himself. However, he won't tell you that Varalas frequently won't sleep due to nightmares of the blight, that he wakes up yelling, unsure of where he is or if the blight still rages, that he skips meal after meal because he forgets that his body does need food even if he doesn't feel hungry.
